Fewer people die from heart attacks but these 3 fatal conditions are on the rise

A new study found that the number of Americans die of heart attack has dropped almost 90% in the last 50 years, but your ticker is still unclear.

Researchers are warning that three other heart conditions are increasing, which are now a larger part of deaths from cardiovascular disease than ever.

Age -adjusted heart -adjusted heart disease rates were analyzed among adults and over 1970 to 2022 for the study, published on Wednesday in the American Heart Association Magazine.

Researchers found that the deaths of heart disease generally fell 66% during this five -decades period, largely driven by a strong decrease in heart attacks.

In 1970, more than half the deaths from heart disease were caused by heart attacks, a form of acute ischemic heart disease.

Around 2022, age -adjusted mortality from heart attacks had fallen by 89%, with less than a third of the deaths of heart diseases attributed to them.

“This evolution over the last 50 years reflects incredible successes in the way the heart attacks and other types of ischemic heart disease are managed,” said Dr. Sara King, a second -year internal internal medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and the first author of the study, in a statement.

“There have been great advances in helping people to survive in initial heart events that were once considered a death sentence,” he added.

Among these advances: More CPR of Bystander, greater awareness of early heart attack signs, improved tools and image treatments, and public health measures such as smoking laws.

But don’t celebrate yet.

“Now that people survives heart attacks, we are seeing an increase in other forms of heart disease,” said Dr. Latha Palanciappan, an associate dean for research at the Stanford School of Medicine and senior author of the study.

The research team found that the deaths of other types of heart disease increased by 81% for the same period of 50 years, with three conditions promoting the increase.

The deaths from arrhythmias, when the heart beats too quickly, too slow or irregular, increased the major, with the mortality rate adjusted to the age of 450%.

The deaths from heart failure, caused by the inability of the heart to pump enough blood, rose 146%.

And the deaths of hypertensive heart disease, linked to long -term blood pressure, increased by 106%.

The conditions are fed, at least in part, by a growing number of Americans with cardiovascular risk factors, researchers theorized.

For example, obesity rates in the United States jumped from 15% to 40% in 2022.

Type 2 diabetes now affects almost half of all adults, while the percentage of high blood pressure from 30% in 1978 to almost 50% in 2022.

“All these risk factors contribute to a continuous burden of heart disease,” said Palanciappan.

The researchers also pointed out the aging population of the country and the longest life expectancy as potential factors, with more north -Americans living to age when heart disease becomes more common.

“We have gained great battles against heart attacks, but the war against heart disease is not over,” said King.

“The next heart health border must focus on preventing heart attacks and also to help aging people with healthier hearts and prevent chronic heart conditions later in life,” he added.

The American Heart Association has exposed steps to significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, called “Life’s Essential 8”.

They include eating a healthier diet, managing weight, quitting, getting more physical activity, enhances sleep and maintaining healthy cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
